The Enlightenment

Hendersons2Peter Henderson is certainly one of a kind. As an impresario he has the most infuriating habit of running around dealing with a hundred other things when he ought to be attending to the business at hand. But then, Peter Henderson is not an impresario; he is a restaurateur and an Edinburgh icon.Hendersons3

Henderson’s vegetarian restaurant has been serving bohemians, students, thespians and trendy types since 1962 and is a true crucible, where the impossible seems attainable.

My relationship with Peter began during the 2009 Festival Fringe, when I had serendipitously went to sample John Cairnie’s Show wearing a kilt and my Edinburgh Bus Tour livery.

Peter was at the time thinking of theming tours along the Henderson’s route, but Peter’s mercurial mind frequently runs in strange undercurrents. He approached me in March to ask if I was interested in doing a show at the restaurant during the Fringe and this was the eventual outcome – a collaboration with David Purdie discovering the nature of the European Enlightenments of Athens, Florence and Edinburgh. It was a remarkable success from Henderson’s point of view, it seems.
